DUNSBOROUGH IS WA'S TOP TOURIST TOWN 2007!

DUNSBOROUGH IS WA’S TOP TOURIST TOWN 2007!

The Geographe Bay Tourism Association is proud to announce that Dunsborough is the GWN 2007 Top Tourism Town!

Dunsborough was announced the winner at the Visitor Centre Conference Gala Dinner, in Esperance on Friday night. This is the second time in the last 10 years that Dunsborough has won this award.

Heather Jenkins, the Visitor Services Manager was delighted to accept this prestigious award.

“We were competing against some other great towns in the state,” Ms Jenkins said, “so it is wonderful to be recognised as the top town.”

“This is really a community award, as the town pulled together to showcase for the judges the great tourism products available.”

“Dunsborough is already popular with holiday makers, as there are great beaches, forest, wineries and attractions to be enjoyed, as well as a fantastic range of accommodation.”

“The GBTA works closely with local tourism operators to ensure we are providing visitors with excellent service, and we are constantly updating our facilities to ensure we can provide the best service.”

Dunsborough was also recognised by the Visitor Centre Association of WA (VCAWA) for their Management and Staff Training, receiving the award for excellence in this category.

“Staff at the Dunsborough Visitor Centre are genuinely passionate about tourism, and proud of the region in which they live,” Ms Jenkins stated.

“This passion and enthusiasm makes them a great team to work with, and easy to manage.”

“We offer incentives and training to assist our staff in providing excellent customer service.”

“These awards are a wonderful initiative from VCAWA, allowing tourism associations and shires to showcase their towns, and recognise the efforts of tourism businesses who provide the fantastic services.” Ms Jenkins stated.

Autumn - Best Viewing at the Underwater Observatory

Since the Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory (UWO) opened in December 2003, Autumn has consistently proven the best season for viewing, with a diverse array of fish and coral on display.

According to Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory Manager, Ms Anna Micha, visibility has been excellent recently with an average of between 8m and 12m.

“The warmer water encourages jelly combs and stingers, which provide a food source for the beautiful big round faced batfish and subsequently we have four near the UWO at the moment,” Ms Micha said.

“We have also noticed unusually large numbers of yellow tail and long finned pike which attract large hunting Samson fish.”

“The clear water we are presently enjoying allows us to spot creatures that usually sit a little further away and we have recently seen eagle rays, numb rays and cuttlefish.”

“We were also excited to see very large male Australian Sealion last week.”

“Traditionally, this is the best time to view the corals near the UWO because they have had plenty of time to grow without storms damaging them.”

“This time last year we also sighted large numbers of species and our ongoing surveys will continue to track the species that we see.”
